Quality Tech I

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Quality Technician I is responsible for all aspects of QA/QC related to microbiological testing of raw materials, wort, beer, and packaging materials/process aids, and process water analysis. QTI will also provide analysis of the results of testing when appropriate. Also included are general lab functions such as data entry, general cleanup and maintenance of lab equipment. The Quality Tech I will also contribute to chemical & physical analysis of raw materials, wort and beer and sensory analysis as needed while maintaining a safe, efficient, and positive work environment.

JOB DUTIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ability to perform all microbiological testing operations on wort & beer, including yeast cell counting, pitch rate determination, microbiological media preparation, sample collection using aseptic technique, microbiological screening of yeast, wort & beer samples, sterile filtration of beer samples, assistance with barrel sampling projects and yeast propagation as needed.
  • Ability to operate PCR apparatus, including managing sampling schedule, sample preparation, managing consumables inventory, data management and results interpretation.
  • Bacteria Identification via Gram Stain, Catalase Test, Oxidase Test, and other traditional microbiological methods.
  • Development and adherence to Lab SOPs based on current best practices.
  • Accurate & timely data entry and interpretation.
  • Timely communication of out-of-spec beers and processes, including participation in root cause analysis and problem solving as needed.
  • Participation in process audits throughout the brewery.
  • Participation in sensory analysis as needed. Maintain an orderly and safe work environment in department as well as entire facility.

REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • 4-year degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry or comparable field of study.
  • Ability to multitask and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong orientation towards quality and safety
